Value Sketching – black and mid-grey

The sketches from the last two days were done with a black and a grey CaranD’Ache Lumocolour watercolour wax pastel. New to me but it’s clean and covers broad areas in two basic mono values. This is useful for tonal exercises preparatory to painting. However, I wanted a fine black  pen that will apply over the wax resist (since I wanted to paint the values, not paint outlines and then fill them in) If all else fails, ask the shop assistant as the saying goes – and the answer she came up with was a fine permanent black marker. Perfect. It goes under or on top of the lumocolour stick. The stick is pretty good too. Applies like a wax crayon or hard oil pastel, but spreads with water. In the case of the roof above, I licked my finger and rubbed.
