Sketching with colour notes

Pencil 6"x9"

It’s so easy to take a digital photograph for reference, but sometimes it’s more useful to sketch in pencil and add notes, like this one above, that I prepared earlier. A photograph has lots more information, of course, but that is its weakness. The notes are your selective memory of what mattered to you at the time. Without the photograph, and only the sketch with notes to refer to, your memory is stimulated and you bring onto the full canvas or watercolour something that will almost certainly be simpler, and more direct.

One Response to “Sketching with colour notes”

  1. You are so right. That was the biggest mind change I made on this painting trip. The sketches become your version of things and mean a more individual painting outcome. The digital reference is fine for checking colours etc but for me a more stilted painting.
Lets encourage people back to drawing again and expressing a snippet of what they see rather than the cameras view. Go Noel.
