Knapwell wood

Oil 6"x9"

I’m enjoying painting trees and woods at the moment. This is in a delightful wood near where my son lives, and I was out on his bike while he was doing his garden with Judy. Yesterday afternoon was calm and quiet. Of course not a sound of planes or a hint of vapour trails at the moment in the UK, so the skies are really quite unique. The leaves aren’t out yet, so you can see through the wood, but the celendines and cowslips are, and of course the blackthorn blossom, which makes this picture.

On the left I am blocking in the main areas of colour and value using a large brush. On the right you can see I am using a limited palette –  Titanium white, Ultramarine blue, Vandyke brown, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna and Cadmium yellow medium.
