The Mill at Old Buckenham

Watercolour 5"x7"

Did this en-route back to Cambridge from showing some paintings to the selection Committee for the Royal Norfolk Show (they invited me to exhibit which was nice) in Norwich. This Mill has the largest diameter tower in the country. I’ve not been inside but I understand it houses four pairs of grinding stones on one floor.

Pencil first, then hatched with brown fountain pen ink which was smudged with water (well, “lick” actually). Carried on with watercolour and then went over the brown of the brick tower with a mix of burnt sienna and payne’s grey. The ocre blotches are from another sketch on the facing page.

  1. Lovely sketch; reminds me of watercolour illustrations for books, etc. 🙂
