The last wave

Oil 13"x18"

I’ve been working on this on and off for more than a year. Started with a pencil sketch on site and a reference photo. The thing that stayed on my mind from the time of the visit was the sparkling highlights of colour – some quite intense. Lots of movement, and against this the still figures at the end of the breakwater. The thing that inspired me to finish it was the new colours I bought a month ago. This was  good opportunity to put them to good use.  It’s a great memory of a wonderful evening with friends in Cornwall we were staying with. I have called it the last wave because there was a lone surfer in the water, obviously reluctant to leave the water as the shadows gathered in. He’s just about visible in the middle distance.
