The Beach at Calais

I didn’t finish posting our trip to Calais the weekend before last. After lunch the five of us walked down to the beach. Cold and raining but the light was interesting. I think my photographs were more successful than my painting. Here’s a couple of samples:

Small watercolour sketch

I tried to paint in watercolour but after a few minutes it started to rain heavily so all I could do was put a rag over the wet picture and close my Moleskine. The next day at home I prized the rag off the paper and worked on it based on my memory and how I “saw” it.

  1. This is lovely. Despite the weather you have made a bright little work. Believe me it far surpasses the photo. In fact I’m amazed at the difference.
On the other little painting you did of the the tree scene, I still like the leaning over one. Some accidents just have more life in them.

  2. Thanks Erin, you are an encouragement! I’ve been asked by a local Art Society to do an evening demonstration for them, but I have been asked to provide a reference from a previous class or society where I have taught. I wonder if the Afghan Deputy Minister for Arts and Culture would oblige!

  3. That would impress them. You could make it all up on official Afghan letterhead. Who would find out!!
