Sunset at Welney wildfowl reserve

Oil 8"x11"

This sunset was like fire – a rich and even deep red extending into orange, yellow, green and finally an exhausted blue.  Everyone seemed mesmerised by it, and as the last light faded groups of swans started to sweep in from the darkness like tired businessmen checking in to their motel after a busy day. I had very little light and time left to work in, so I made an early decision to scrub a pale yellow wash over the bottom two-thirds so it would dry off while I was pushing in the sky colours. Then I could superimpose a dark blue on the yellow, leaving patches to represent the wavelets catching the light. It was a happy end to a good session.
