The Grand Canyon

When my wife (Judy, for the sake of clarity) saw me painting this she said “But Noel you never paint from photos..”  This came as a sort of mild rebuke, but hey it’s a cold, miserable, grey winter here in the UK and what’s more our house heating is on the blink. So – I need a bit of sunshine. And anyway I distinctly remember saying at the time I took the photo “This would make a nice painting..” So there we are – justified!! I showing five stages here as I painted from white gessoed board to finish:

Oil 8"x12" Ultramarine. I usually start like this

Next I block in shadows with dark chromatic greys

Then I put in clear colour highlights to cover the canvas

Now I develop highlights and shadows - and decide I need to scrub out some areas

And finally fuss and fiddle with adjacent tones and soft and hard shapes

If you want to see this type of landscape painted plein air absolutely exquisitely, go to http://nathanfowkes-sketchbook.blogspot.com  You are in for a treat.
