Afghanistan 4

Evening view from the roof, Kabul. Oil 8"x12"

It was a pleasure to paint in oils on a few occasions. This image is fixed in my mind as typical Afghan. There was 50 kites high up in the sky while I was painting this – not at all unusual at the end of the day. The pollution and dust fills the air, diffuses the sunlight and renders all the foliage a dull green. Entrancing!

Whilst talking oils, I was amazed to find when taking my first oil painting class that the students were using DIESEL fuel to thin their paints. I had to use the same when I was with them. They have nothing else.  Apart from the effect on skin and breathing, it makes the painting surface go dull. And the west spends billions in aid there!
