High and dry at Mersea Island

I could spend a LOT of time in this location. I started this painting (8″x12″) as an exercise with a student. I set up a reference photo on the computer screen and then we worked side by side for a couple of hours. Since then I’ve put it to one side, but have dabbed away at it from time to time. My aim was to preserve the overall connection between the dark masses running through the centre by keeping them darker than the rest of the painting, keeping the foreshore fairly broad-brush (although in reality there was a lot of small detail) and emphasizing the ropes and posts to provide some detail and alternative interest. The passage I’m most pleased with is the shadow of the big boat which reflects the cool grey-blue of a broad sky.
