Day 14 – through France to Calais

Town square Sainte Methoulde

Town square Sainte Menehould

Not the most exciting French town but not bad either. Its local dish is pig’s trotter, which I rather enjoyed. Another pencil sketch after breakfast just before we left.

At last – an oil sketch. The trouble was finding somewhere to store a wet painting. However, now we are on the last day, it was not too difficult to find a place on top of everything in the back of the pickup. This took an hour to paint. Oil on board prepared with gesso. 30cm x 20cm I usually cover the support with thinned paint and then move onto a second application. In this case, with a time constraint I outlined the composition with biro and then one layer of paint layed in patchwork-style. Without a doubt the best painting of the holiday – on the last day, just when I’ve got my eye in!

We got to the coast in good time before the ferry to Dover, so we meandered down the coast a few miles to the south of Calais. Another area beloved of the Impressionists. Late summer’s sunny afternoon – the light was truly irridescent. Pencil sketch.
